When Hillbilly Elegy was published in 2016, it became something of a political Rorschach test—cited by everyone with a theory about why working-class Americans felt left behind. The book itself is more modest: a memoir about growing up in Middletown, Ohio, with roots in the Appalachian community of Jackson, Kentucky. Vance writes about his grandmother, who raised him; his mother, who struggled with addiction; and the culture he came from, with affection and also clear-eyed assessment of its dysfunctions. The book has attracted criticism—some reviewers argued he overgeneralized from his own experience, or that his policy conclusions don’t follow from his personal story. Those are legitimate debates. What’s harder to dispute is the quality of the memoir itself: specific, emotionally honest, and driven by genuine care for the people and places it describes. Worth reading alongside other accounts of working-class America for a fuller picture.
