Michael Pollan’s previous book, How to Change Your Mind, introduced many general readers to research on psychedelics and consciousness. A World Appears goes further, engaging with the philosophy of mind, the neuroscience of perception, and the question of what consciousness actually is—not just in humans but potentially in other organisms. Pollan is a journalist by training and disposition: he’s not advancing a single thesis so much as following a question through multiple disciplines, interviewing researchers and thinkers, trying out ideas and testing them against evidence. The book covers attention, perception, the hard problem of consciousness, and the ways that psychedelic experiences have forced scientists to revise some of their assumptions. It’s accessible without being shallow. Pollan is genuinely curious rather than agenda-driven, which makes the book more useful than a lot of popular neuroscience writing, which tends to oversell its conclusions.
